THREE caring Ayr residents stepped up to help a man in a wheelchair who was struggling to move during the recent storms.

Shaun Campbell, who was visiting Ayr the weekend Storm Gertrude battered the town’s shore and high street, contacted the Ayr Advertiser to thank the kind strangers who went out of their way to help him.

Mr Campbell and his wife had been staying at the Ayr and Galloway Hotel from Friday, January 29 to Saturday, January 30 but enjoyed their visit that much they decided to stay in Ayr for an extra two days.

On Monday, February 1 Shaun and his wife were heading for the train station to go home to Newarkin England when a gust of wind threw their belongings in the air and scattered them all over the road.

Speaking about the day’s event, he said: “It was all so surreal. The kerbs are really high in Ayr which made it really hard to get a wheelchair on.

“I had bought my son new Adidas trainers but had to place them on the ground with my laptop cover and receipts while I attempted to get onto the kerb.

“All of a sudden they had blown all over the street. The passing cars did not stop and drove over them. My wife could not help as she was carrying six bags and suitcases.
“A very kind man and woman ran over the street and got all of our stuff. The traffic did not even stop for them and they had to dodge in between buses.”

Shaun has been in a wheelchair for six months due to narrowed arteries in his left leg and had to have an emergency bypass operation. He finds it hard to put any weight on his foot.

Once the pair managed to collect all the scattered belongings for the Campbells, they continued for Ayr train station.

However, part of the station had been cordoned off due to the weather so they had to go around the back.

Another helpful gentleman helped Shaun and his wife get to the platform.

Shaun told us: “I want to say thank you to these people who took time out of their day and helped us. I would come back to Ayr in a flash. Send us a helicopter immediately.”
