FOODBANK volunteer Angela McNay hosted the election hustings 'Lets talk about Poverty' which took place at Ayr Town Hall last week.

She spoke the extent of poverty in South Ayrshire which sees 4605 people turn to the Trussel Trust for help, which is just one of the foodbank organisations in the area.

On average the Trussel Trust feed over one million hungry mouths in the UK.

In South Ayrshire 45,771 kg of food were given out in the last year and 46,823 kg food collected.

Speaking about these figures Angela said: "There are not just numbers, these are real people who live on a low income.

"Foodbanks see people everyday who have been benefit sanctioned. Loads of people have nothing. I understand why we need them but where is the balance.

"If you look down the high street you would not believe Ayr is one of the most deprived areas in Scotland. Ayr North, Girvan and South Carrick and Ayr West around Charlotte Street fall into this category.

"People who come to us are mortified. It takes a lot for people to leave their dignity and beg for food. We hand out a three day supply of food.

"We work with around 90 organisations in South Ayrshire who issue food vouches including South Ayrshire Council debt, Citizens Advice and other Council Workers.

"South Ayrshire foodbank are like a military operation near the airport which runs from Troon all the way to Girvan. Communities, churches and schools all donate which inspires me to keep going.

"What is shameful is food poverty in Scotland. It is not shameful to have foodbanks because I think we are helping. One third of foodbank users are children. I am asking you what can we do about this?"
