AYR athlete Laura Jamieson was focussed on one thing when she joined more than 36,000 participants at the London Marathon on Sunday.

The 29-year-old catering assistant was there to raise as much money as possible in memory of her late dad, as well as enjoying the experience to the full.

As she crossed the line in 5hr 1min 14sec it was mission accomplished on both, having smashed her £1k cash target by raising £1,340 — with money still coming in.

Her dad David passed away from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2012 and Laura, a member of Ayr Seaforth Athletic Club, was running in aid of MND Scotland.

She said: “Although it was not my best marathon time, it was all about the experience, raising money for the charity and it was an incredible day.

“There were seven of us from the club taking part, one raising money for Cancer Research and the others doing it to improve their times.

“I had taken part in the Manchester and Arran marathons before but, on Sunday, at 19 miles I was beginning to feel it and the last seven miles were tough.

“But the crowds were fantastic and cheering all the way and that spurs you on, so I managed to get to the line.”

Laura made the most of her time in London and even embarked on an early shopping trip in the capital on Monday morning.

“I took it all in all the way round the course and enjoyed seeing all the sights, such as Buckingham Palace, which I really enjoyed.

“There were many highlights by one of the best was Tower Bridge and hearing the roars of the crowds — then getting to the finish line was just incredible.

“I would like to thank everyone who donated money and helped beat my target of £1,000. People can still donate at www.justgiving.com/Laura-Jamieson8 and I would appreciate any contribution people can make to this amazing charity,” she added.
