A MAN has been seriously assaulted on Ayr's Main Street outside Day Today in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is understood the 41-year-old was attacked just after midnight on May, 8 causing him to fall to the ground and injure his head before he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for a serious head injury.

Detectives are continuing their enquiries following the incident and a forensic tent has been set up outside outside the convenience store to recover forensic evidence.

Police received a report of a man being injured just after the incident took place and emergency services attended the scene.

Officers are in the process of carrying out door-to-door enquiries and gathering CCTV footage from in and around the area for further information.

So far they have established the man has been the victim of a serious assault.

Detective Sergeant Jane Hogg said: "Our enquiries so far have revealed the man has been subjected to a serious assault. We are in the process of trying to piece together his movements and establish exactly what has happened to him.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or heard any sort of disturbance in the area to contact us.

"Any information or knowledge about the crime or the suspect could prove vital in our enquiries as we try to trace whoever is responsible."
