SP Energy Network have began planting new trees along the cycle path in the Fullarton area of Troon to replace those destroyed by engineering work.

Residents were furious at the damage caused by the company when they were laying new cables adjacent to the walkway which runs behind Fullarton Crescent.

The company, who admitted they got it wrong, have been attending the Troon Community Council meetings to see how they can help fix the mess.

Robert Milligan, of SP Energy, addressed members: "We are looking into the Troon Open and making sure the locals of Troon and shops are made aware of any problems we may face before then.

"Work has already begun to replace each tree. It will take some time to recover from this position but we thank you for your continued support."

A letter has been requested to be sent out to local residents with a fact sheet and progress of their work.

One local resident said: "I was absolutely flabbergasted at what happened to the trees. In my mind you has not thought of the impact this was causing on cyclists and walkers.

"I was traumatised as this was a lovely route to go through and a big part of my life which made me very upset when it was damaged. But you have done your best to improve the situation and I appreciate that."

Solar lights on the path will also be restored and SP Energy have been in talks with Sustrans - the National Cycle Network - unit to discuss how they are going to repair the area.

Members also raised concerns as they had not been contacted by Sustrans yet and want to be kept updated in the process.
