RESIDENTS of Troon's North Shore Lane are concerned for their health and safety as they have been invaded by rodents.

Locals spotted a group of five rats in the area at the beginning of April. They believe they have been coming from the railway track and are their nests are being disturbed at night.

The neighbourhood has reported chasing the vermin away from their properties in the last ten days. They fear the rats could breed making the problem worse.

They contacted local councillor Philip Saxton to make him aware of the issue who has since been in contact with Ayrshire Housing, Environmental Health and Network Rail to see what they can do about the problem.

Speaking at the Troon Community Council meeting, cllr Saxton, said: "I have had phone calls from concerned locals complaining about the rats. It could cause particular problems for people in a wheel chair.

"I think this is something we should be taking seriously. I am aware that it seems to be causing problems further up the street and I am still waiting for a proper response from these organisations I have contacted.

"At the moment Environmental Health say it is Network Rails problem and vice versa and I am still waiting for a response for Ayrshire Housing."

Chairwoman Helen Duff said: "There are also children in this area and I think it is vital that we do something about it."

Cllr Phillip Saxton continued: "Disease associated with rats but the council are drawing their heels stating that it is not their problem. I have asked them to liaise with Network Rail and Ayrshire Housing to do something about it.

"This is an emergency and at the end of the day we should be able to go out and sort this out and bill Environmental Health and Network Rail."
