A DRIVER who got out of his car at a temporary set of traffic lights to strike the window of another car on the A77 at Turnberry has been jailed.

Paul Martin pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm by exiting his vehicle, approaching the other in an aggressive and intimidating manner, striking the drivers window before driving off in an aggressive manner on March, 7 this year.

He further admitted assaulting a Police Officer on Ballantrae's Main Street by punching him repeatedly on the head, as well as driving over the limit on the same day.

Martin was found with 101 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath which exceeded the prescribed limit, 22 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The 22-year-old appeared before Sheriff Desmond Leslie at Ayr Sheriff Court recently.

Depute Fiscal Cath Whyte said: "The witness was driving towards the traffic lights at Turnberry and noticed Mr Martin who punched at his window before getting back into the vehicle, went round the black corsa and drove off.

"Shortly after, police officers stopped Mr Martin's vehicle and could smell alcohol. He attacked the officer and was breathalysed."

Speaking on his behalf, Robert Turnbull said: "The report has a lot of details to the back ground of his circumstances. It has given some explanation as to why this happened.

"He is extremely regrettable about what happened. He has a record from 10 years ago. He should not have been driving. It all falls down to the alcohol he was taking at the time."

Sheriff Leslie addressed the dock: "This is disgraceful conduct quite frankly on the road, for that you are going to jail."

Martin has been jailed for 135 days and has been disqualified from holding and obtaining a drivers licence for three years.
