AN avid Notts County fan is doing his best to secure a place in history for a Troon-born footballer who is only one of three players to score a hattrick in the FA Cup Final.

Andy Black and Jimmy Willan are appealing to Scottish football fans as well as his fellow Notts County fans to back his campaign to get James “Jimmy” Logan a place in history by giving the legendary footballer a headstone that will last forever.

Currently, James Logan is buried in an unmarked plot in Loughborough, Leciestershire. The Scot died aged 25 in 1896 after catching pneumonia two weeks after having to play football in heavy rain wearing normal clothes as opposed to kits when playing for the now dissolved Loughborough FC.

Logan is one of only three men to score a hattrick in an FA Cup Final when he lit up the final between his team Notts County and Bolton Wanderers in 1894 at Goodison Park in Liverpool.

Jimmy, who was born in Troon, started his career for Ayr FC but with Scottish Football languishing in amateurism at the time, many Scots looked south. He made his debut for Scotland in 1891 scoring against Wales in a 4-3 win at Wrexham.

He joined Notts County after spells at Sunderland and Aston Villa. He would have his most famous moment scoring a hattrick against Bolton, a feat that has only been repeated once in the 122 years since.

Andy Black along with another Notts County fan Jimmy Willan, who has organised the headstone and is appealing for small donations to make it all possible said of Logan: “It’s such a shame that a great player for my club has went totally unnoticed to the point he has no headstone.

“What he achieved in his short career was incredible. A hattrick in an FA Cup final which has only been done three times in the cup’s entire history. He should be legend for Scottish Football. We have a star on our kits and we call it Logan’s star to remember him.

“He was 20 when he played for Ayr before moving down to England. Scottish Internationalist but he hasn’t got a headstone, such a shame. Imagine he hadn’t died when he was 25? He could’ve went on to achieve great things”.

It looks like there will be an official ceremony in Loughborough to remember the Ayrshire footballer on August 23 at 12pm. Andy has organised to have a representative from Notts County, the Scottish Football Association and the English Football Association.
