NICOLA Sturgeon praised the impact the Open has on her home turf when she came along to Royal Troon on the opening day of the Championship.

Speaking to the Advertiser, she said: “This is one of the biggest sporting events in the world so to have it in Scotland is big, and obviously I come from not far from here, so to have it in Ayrshire is even bigger.

“The economic benefit is immense - last year in St Andrew’s it amounted to £140m - so for all sorts of reasons it is great thing to have here.”
She also praised the recent decision by Royal Troon Golf Club to allow women members.

She says: “It is the 21st century and Scotland is a progressive country. So I commend Royal Troon on the decision they have taken”.
