SOUTH AYRSHIRE remembered The Battle of Britain with a special ceremony on its 76th anniversary on Sunday.

The Ayr and Prestwick Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association invited all to attend the annual ceremony at the Prestwick War Memorial and at the Polish War Memorial at the RAFA Club.

The service was conducted by Reverend David Clarkson and Father Patrick McSorley.

Also in attendance were the Lord Lieutenant for Ayrshire and Arran Mr. John Duncan, and Mr. Jimmy Murphy of the Pipes, the Salvation Army Band and Bugler, the Standard Bearers and Representatives of the Armed Service organisations, Inspector Alister Kelly and colleagues from Police Scotland ( Troon ).

Also in atendance on the day were Provost Helen Moonie, local councillors and gignitaries and the Officers and Cadets from Ayr/Prestwick Squadron and Girvan Squadron A.T.C. 

And, importantly, representatives from the Polish Community to honour those Poles who fought and died with their British and Commonwealth colleagues in the 1940 Battle of Britain.

John Higgins, Parades Convener of the Prestwick Branch of the RAFE Association, said: "On behalf of the RAF Association I wish to publicly thank all the people who took part in the Annual Battle of Britain Remembrance Service on Sunday to commemorate those who gave their lives in that momentous battle."

For over three months The Allied forces with foreign pilots from the United States and abroad fought in the skies to secure a crucial victory in World War II. 

It proved a crucial turning point in the war as the loss forced the hand of Adolf Hitler as he postponed 'Operation Sea Lion' which would have seen Nazi Germany invade the United Kingdom.
