A PROPOSED new pub in Maybole has been put on hold following a dispute between the owner and a local resident.

James Dunlop was present at the licensing board meeting at South Ayrshire Council on Thursday hoping to gain a licence for his new premises.
But councillors decided it would be best to view the site before making any further decision.

The proposal was for Mr Dunlop’s new pub – which is still in construction – to be granted licensing hours of 12.30pm-1am throughout the week. The pub is hoping to be a food and drink hotbed for the town as well as having a lounge for function and commercial use.

However, the plan has been met with some  opposition from local resident and firefighter Jane McCulloch, who lives next door to the new pub.

Mrs McCulloch said at the meeting: “I have no objections to anyone making a living, nor is this personal towards Mr Dunlop.

“However, I have to object on the lateness of this licence due to the noise generated from the premises.

“I have poor health with a difficulty to get sleep as well as being a firefighter where I am expected to work 120 hours a week on call.

“I have tried to sleep in many different areas of the house to help my condition but it rarely works.

“My concern is the lack of sleep which I will have to endure when this pub opens. I have to make life and death choices at my work and with sleep deprivation I could put lives at risk.”

The meeting then heard that Mr Dunlop had consulted environmental health regarding noise and the officer agreed that it noise could become an issue.

However, Mr Dunlop added that the environmental health officer was mislead over where Mrs McCulloch lived and he would address any noise issues once The Carrick was open.

Councillor Mary Kilpatrick asked the applicant if he considered soundproofing.

He replied: “If it is required then yes. However, I am not sure if that will be necessary as the full pub is double glazed.”

Chair of the meeting Councillor Ann Galbraith said: “I think a site visit might be necessary. Members of the licensing board will then have a clear picture of the outlay of the pub and therefore are more equipped to make a decision.”

The result of this dispute and license application is to be decided at the next meeting. The Carrick would be in place of the old Rainbow Services daycare centre.
