THE Ayrshire Roads Alliance have confirmed they will draw up plans to address the traffic problems from Doonholm Road onto the A77.

Members of the Alloway and Doonfoot Community Council had previously met with MSP John Scott to discuss the issue and the possibility of creating a filter lane for the left hand turn from Doonholm Road onto the Bypass.

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance told members of the Community Council last Tuesday they will speak to Transport Scotland to address the traffic flow problems.

Speaking on behalf of the Alliance, Kevin Braidwood, said: "I was asked a month and a half ago by MSP John Scott to look at the junction at Doonholm Road onto the A77.

"There is an issue with a hold up of traffic. We want to create a North bound strip but need to contact Transport Scotland. We need to find funding and present a case that funding would work.

"We need to design it first this year then next year we can look at the design. There is an issue we would be happy to do something to get rid of that problem."

Concerns were raised about the same problem on Maybole Road. Community councillors believe that cars turning left cannot see oncoming traffic when vehicles are sitting on the junction beside them to turn right.

They fear this could have serious consequences.

Since Sainsbury's will no longer be establishing a supermarket at Corton, plans to install a roundabout at the junction have been put on hold.

Cllr Bill Grant said: "Sainsbury's have let us down with that. We bent over backwards to accommodate them and Waitrose. I have used the junction at Maybole road, which has been there for 25 years. It is perfectly safe."

Cllr Allan Dorans added: "The junctions are 200 years apart. I am very aware that the Ayrshire Roads Alliance have spent cash on this. I do not want to raise hopes but it is great idea. I like it."

An update on the situation will be presented to councillors at their meeting next month.
