DESPITE concerns that Girvan and surrounding areas have been neglected, local businesses came trumps up in the Ayrshire Business Awards.

The event took place last Thursday, October 6 at the Seamill Hydro in West Kilbride where the proud winners collected their prizes from many categories.

For an area, where in recent years some of the locals have claimed their towns have been abandoned, this could be a step in the right direction to boost the local economy and unite the community.

Ballantrae Festival of Food and Drink bagged the Ayrshire Food and Drink Prize after a short video clip was shown to those who attended the ceremony.

The Ballantrae Development Group has formed a food strategy association made up of professionals and volunteers from different parts of Ayrshire, reflecting the growing importance of food and drink tourism.

Glenapp Castle, also in Ballantrae won Excellence in Customer Service Awards, for maintaining an 'exceptional' level of personal customer service for over 15 years.

Evidence of this was found in all their customer feedback, guest comment books, guest questionnaires, social media and via Tripadvisor.

Maybole's JD Cameron was awarded Independent Retailer of the year as they have invested a significant sum in their business allowing them to meet their allocated sales target.

Graeme McKinstry, Vice President, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, congratulated all the winners.

He said: "Apart from showcasing Ayrshire's top businesses, this event and the whole business week act as a catalyst and encourage young entrepreneurs, from whatever sector, to strive for success."
