WELLINGTON School in Ayr is top of the league in Scotland for Advanced Higher results.

In addition, the Scottish Council for Independent Schools annual league table rated Wellington’s performance at Higher level in the top 12 for 2015/16.

The school can be proud of its academic excellence and the Scottish Qualifications Authority results for this year show that its standards remain consistently high.

As a non-selective school with a firm focus on the individual, all levels produced excellent results, including National 5.

Typically undertaken by fourth year pupils, almost a fifth of the group achieved eight grade A passes.

Overall, the grade A pass rate was 72 per cent and the A-C pass rate was 96 per cent.

At Wellington, pupils are encouraged to take eight subjects at this level, which is unusual in other Ayrshire schools but provides pupils with a strong work ethic and broad base of subjects which they specialise in at subsequent examination levels.

At Higher, six Wellington pupils achieved 5 grade A passes — again, almost 20 per cent of the year group.

The A grade pass rate at Higher was 63% and the A-C pass rate at Higher was 94%.

Pupils really shone in the Advanced Highers, with seven Wellington students achieving three grade A passes.

Most pupils take two subjects at this level so this is an outstanding statistic.
“The grade A pass rate was 69 per cent and the A-C pass rate at Advanced Higher was 95 per cent.

Headmaster at Wellington School, Mr Johnson, said: “Although there is more to education than academic results, we are very proud of what our pupils achieve here at Wellington.

“There is a real sense of common purpose here, which means that pupils strive to do their best and teachers work hard to support them.”
