A FOUR storey block of flats burst into flames on Ayr's Davidson Place on Sunday night.

It is believed the blaze was started as a result of discarded furniture being set alight at 11.36pm on Sunday, November 20.

One man had to be assessed at the scene by paramedics as he was suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

As a result of the incident an electrical junction box within the building was damaged and Scottish Power were requested to attend.

Ayr Advertiser:

Station Manager Derek Davidson said: "The incident Commander instructed firefighters to attack the blaze using Breathing apparatus and a high pressure hose reel jet which provided a rapid knock down of the flames.

"On arrival the crews found a fire in the ground floor communal area of a four storey block of flats.

"I would urge residents in all blocks of flats to ensure there is no storage or dumping of combustible materials within communal areas as it will be an easy target for wilful fire raising.

"The implications for all who reside within the property is quite significant as people could easily become trapped if the fire spread and lives would be put at risk."

It took almost an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze which was finally put out at 1am on Monday, November 21.
