GIRVAN Library is on a mission to allow older people to access film with the creation of an innovative film club.

The Afternoon Film Club – which takes place on the first Monday of every month – is a chance to bring the community together to watch and discuss films.

The club in Girvan has already proved a major hit with locals, enjoying a full house at their first screening on Monday, November 7.

Councillor Bill Grant, Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said:

"It’s great news that the film club is proving so popular. Libraries have an important role to play in our communities; they are not only a central resource for learning and culture but for entertainment too.

"Well done to everyone at Girvan Library for all their efforts to get the film club up and running. Mary Stewart and her staff are always keen to get involved in community projects and I hope the Film Club goes from strength to strength."

Over the last few months all participating libraries have received valuable new film screening equipment and training - providing venues with all they need to host regular film events.

Run by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), South Ayrshire Council’s library service were successful in their bid to become one of only six pilot projects being run in Scotland under the Film Education in Libraries Project. The £190,000 initiative was made possible through Creative Scotland as part of their Film Strategy and aims to improve the provision of film and moving image education across the country.

Films screened at the club are chosen by both members of the public and library staff, with plans now afoot to show a variety of classic films over the coming months.

Their new screening equipment also allows the library to host events throughout the year. For instance, during Book Week Scotland (November 21 – November 27) the library will show a book adaptation for local school children.

A special archive event, with a focus on historical footage of Girvan, is also planned for early next year.
