GRAFFITI which has become an unwanted prominent feature on an underpass that sits parallel to Murdoch's Loan is causing concern.

Spray paintings dominate the wall which used to act as a tunnel on the former railway line which has now been converted into a cycle track.

The issue was raised at an Alloway and Doonfoot community council meeting last week. PC Richie Armstrong clarified that he had received complaints regarding the issue.

Addressing members of the council he said: "I have had complaints regarding the underpass at the Burns Centre which has been vandalised.

"I propose that something needs to be done with the schools, for example, a competition where the winners get their art work put on display in the tunnel instead of graffiti."

Cllr Bill Grant added: "I welcome this suggestion. I have raised the idea several times. There could be a Tam O'Shanter mural on the right hand side and a picture of 1969, and the last train which ran to Bucklands on the left hand side.

"To me it is screaming out to be done. I just think it is fascinating. I have raised the idea with the colleges and perhaps the Burns Clubs could be involved too."

Community councillor Brendan Ferguson, said: "You do see youngsters drinking but it doesn't tend to be Buckfast but wine."

PC Anderson added: "They are young people who have nowhere else to go. It is a perfect place for them but when adults come along they tend to shoot off.

"When children take an ownership in something they tend to protect it. That is my opinion from my experience."

Community councillors agreed they would discuss the ideas with the local primary schools to see if they can find a solution to the problem.
