YOU will have heard of football on the beach, Brazilian style.

But golf on the beach was a novel experience sampled by people from across Troon on the first Saturday of the New Year.

Secret Santa organiser Campbell Malone organised a Target Golf event on the sand in front of the old paddling pool. The free family event attracted around 50 adults and children from the town.

There was a hole-in-one challenge, targets to try and hit and paddling ponds to land the golf balls in.

Greenkeepers from Royal Troon provided holes with concrete on the bottom which were fixed to the ground and placed at the bottom of buckets with flags attached.

The targets were set at 25, 50 and 75 yards for kids and 75, 100 and 150 yards for adults.

People also sat in the old shelter across from the beach to take in the action.

Brothers Jamie (10) and Sam (8) Braddock were stars of the show with the Troon Primary School pupils each nailing a hole-in-one.

Jamie said: "The event was fun, it was good to get fresh air. I enjoy golf and won the Seven Wonders competition at Troon Welbeck in September."

Mum Alison said: " The children enjoyed the golf event. It's good to something other than rugby and football."

Organiser Campbell Malone added: "It went really well. The greenkeepers made us proper golf holes and it was hard to land the ball. We might organise an event like this on a summer night at 9pm at low tide on the beach."
