AYRSHIRE charity Hansel’s gift shop Hi Street in Prestwick is looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand.

The role is ideal for young people looking for a work placement in the fast moving retail sector or retirees with time to spare, volunteers do not need any prior experience but need to be able to commit to three hours a week.

In return they will be given training in areas such as cash handling, displaying merchandise and stock-taking, and learn more about a whole new concept of charity shop.

Unlike most charity shops, Hi Street does not rely on donations of second hand goods, all of the stock is new with the majority showcasing the talents of local designers and crafts people.

It is also a hub for the local community and hosts regular craft workshops and classes. All profits from the store go directly to the charity which supports people living with learning disabilities.

Volunteers must be aged 16 or over and be relaxed dealing with members of the public.

Brooke O’Connell, Retail Fundraising Assistant, said: “Word about Hi Street is starting to spread now and we are in the lovely position of being invited to take stalls at more and more events locally.

“As a result we need to add a few more people to our rota of fabulous volunteers, who have been the backbone of the shop since our launch just over a year ago.

“Our ideal candidate would be someone outgoing and happy to start conversations with customers – whether that be a young person who wants to volunteer as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award, a mum whose kids have just started school or a retiree.”
