DRIVERS are up in arms at the ‘lack of consideration’ from Transerv Scotland who constantly appear to be closing the A77.

Since they became responsible for the A77 about three years ago there have been a series of road repairs within the region of Carrick, where the road is a single carriageway.

In every case, the A77 has been shut over the weekend.

Cllr Brian Connelly has been in touch with Transerv who claim the road closures are for health and safety reasons and to save time.

But villages in rural areas are left stranded while the work is carried out.

Cllr Connelly said: “It has been a trend that they [Transerv] do not understand public consultation and they do not understand the effects this has on the local economy.

“They have arranged meetings in Glasgow, which myself and Cllr Alec Clark have asked to be relocated to Ayr, but before we meet they send out an email outlining what is going to happen.”

Work will be carried out on the Ayr side of the A77 this weekend but the road will be closed to avoid ‘50 minute delays’.

Cllr Connelly continued: “This claim is ridiculous. It is scandalous. Kirkoswald will be cut off.

“They disregard the local community.

“Recently, when the A77 was closed, a HGV came off the road which links Maybole, Crosshill and Girvan.

“They had to close the road again while it was pulled from a ditch. Drivers were delayed even further when they came across it.”

Cllr Alec Clark added: “We have been affected badly by the road closures over the past couple of years.

“The issue is that the rural communities are not up to standard to take the high volume of traffic travelling to the ferry port.

“There was a convoy in Maybole last week led to delays of five minutes, not 50 like Transerv suggest. Businesses are affected.

“There is not trying to reason with them.

“They have already made up their mind.”
Scottish Transerv had still to comment on the situation as we went to press.
