MSP for Ayr John Scott has slammed Prestwick Airport chief after reports of his expenses came out.

It was reported in the national press that Ron Smith used public money to buy a £1400 bed. He is now facing calls to payback the money.

The freedom of information response revealed also that Mr. Smith claimed £800 for a dining suite and £230 for a bedroom carpet.

Mr. Smith became the new chief of Prestwick Airport on a £100,000-£120,000-a-year salary.
John Scott MSP was not impressed.

He said: "While most people will understand there is a fair case for expenses to be paid as part of a relocation package, I doubt many will consider that the taxpayer picking up the bill for a £1400 bed is justifiable.”

A Prestwick spokeswoman said: "It is standard practice for organisations to pay relocation costs if a successful candidate needs to move to the area to take up their post. This happens in both the private and public sector.

"Glasgow Prestwick Airport's search for a new Chief Executive Officer extended across the UK and beyond to ensure that we got the right person for the job. It was always anticipated that relocation expenses may be incurred.

"As a commercial organisation run at an arm's length from the Scottish Government, this relocation package was agreed as part of the appointment process."

It was confirmed also by the Airport that the items in question, money could be claimed back in VAT.
