A WOMAN who punched a vulnerable adult with learning difficulties on the head at a clinic has been remanded in custody.

Ann Docherty admitted assaulting the woman on July 25, 2016 at the Ayr Clinic on Dalmellington Road. The 43-year-old, who is already serving a sentence appeared from custody at Ayr Sheriff Court last week before Sheriff Mhari Mactaggart.

The court heard how Docherty had attended a clinic and was sitting in the communal TV room with the complainer when the incident took place.

Depute fiscal Scott Toal said: "The complainer is a 22-year-old with learning difficulties. She was talking but Docherty became angry and told the complainer to shut up.

"The woman refused and Docherty went over and started punching her. Staff managed to stop them.

Speaking on her behalf, defence solicitor David McPherson, said: "She is still sorry for losing her temper. Her release date is May and has been attending that clinic for a while. I wonder if your Lady Ship might defer sentence so we can see what her living arrangements will be.

"This is a serious offence where unfortunately she lost her temper and acted in this manner."

Sheriff Mactaggart said: "I am with you on deferring sentence but not with you on the period of time. I want to bring her back just shortly before her release date and minimise the risk she imposes.

"This was a vulnerable person in a very vulnerable state."

Sentence has been deferred until next month.
