THE AMAZING winner of the 2016 Troon Citizen of the Year - Sheila Cameron, was recognised at the Piersland House Hotel on Thursday.

Sheila, who is the driving force behind the community group "Strokefolk", was awarded with the Troon Community Council 2016 Citizen of the Year at the tail end of last year.

The winner of the award started the charity group back in 2007 after she had spent 10 and a half years with a previous charity that decided to go in a different direction from where Sheila wanted to go.

Sheila was gathered with friends and family at the Piersland House Hotel as members of Troon Community Council presented Sheila with the award.

The worthy winner told the Ayr Advertiser Series that she was taken-a-back to win the award.

She said: "Very taken-a-back when I heard about it.

"I used to read about them (previous winners) but never ever imagined myself getting something like this

"Everyone here (at the awards) has helped me with my stroke group, it is lovely to be surrounded by friends who have made Strokefolk happen."

MSP for Ayr John Scott darted from FMQ's in Edinburgh to Troon to be at the event and pay tribute to Sheila.

He said: "I am delighted that Sheila has been honoured in this way.

"I cannot think of someone more deserving as a citizen of Troon award. Strokefolk has been an extraordinary commitment of selflessness.

"The good that she has done improving the quality of life for those who have suffered a stroke. She has inspired a tram of volunteers over many years and led them with laughter, humour and inspiration.

"She is a pillar of the community in Troon and I am pleased to be invited to this event".

Chair of the Troon Community Council Helen Duff also paid tribute to the 2016 Troon Citizen of the Year.

She said: "It is a very great honour to be given this award.

"There is an awful lot of people nominated for the award, Sheila 100 per cent deserves it for the work she has done for people who have suffered from strokes in Troon.

"She is a very, very worthy winner."
