TWO men who were thrown out of Troon’s Cheeky Charlies started a brawl that showered patrons with glass, with one left with a shard in their eye.

Declan Moore (36) and Ryan Thompson (34) appeared before Sheriff Carole Cunninghame at Ayr Sheriff Court last week for acting aggressively, shouting, swearing and attempting to force entry back into the pub once they had been removed.

The incident took place in March this year. Thompson admitted seizing one of the door stewards by his neck and tried to throttle another man.

Moore owned up to culpably and recklessly punching the glass window of the pub door when it was being held shut. This caused the window to smash with the broken glass hitting a number of people.

One man suffered injuries to his body and head and another was left with glass in their eye. Moore also destroyed the door of his hotel room at the Anchorage Hotel.

The court heard how the incident took place at 11.15pm. The men appeared to be annoying the girls sitting in front of them.

Depute fiscal Lorri Pidgeon, said: “The door steward moved to keep watch over them. The men were asked to leave. At that point Moore left the premises. Thompson remained at the front door to finish his drink.

“At 12.55am a customer shouted at Thompson to leave. He took umbrage at this. The door steward tried to eject him but Thompson began struggling with him.

“Moore had tried to regain entry. He was shouting and pushing the other patron out of the way. Staff contacted police. Both accused were aggressive towards the door stewards.

“One of the customers tried to help but he was grabbed by the throat. Thompson dug his finger into his throat and grabbed the door steward by the throat.

“The door steward managed to keep both men off the premise and helped the remainder of the guests inside. A member of staff had arrived and reviewed the CCTV. He then followed the men to the Anchorage Hotel.

“He stayed outside to make sure they did not leave before they got there. Police viewed the CCTV and entered the hotel. They found the room they had been staying in.

“The door had been forced open and there were shards lying on the floor.”

Damage to the door of Cheeky Charlies cost £100 and £80 for the Anchorage Hotel.

Speaking on their behalf, defence solicitor, Glenn Davis, said: “You may will have noticed that through coming to court today, these men can barely lift their heads because of the shame they feel.

“Mr Moore and Mr Thompson are over here to renovate Troon’s pharmacy. They had two other men working with them. They had been working for 14 hours, from 6am until 8pm with only a 20 minute lunch break.

“They went for a drink and drank to excess. One of the other members of the party, neither accused, had fallen asleep, which had attracted the attention of the bouncer.

“Their perception at the time was that the stewards were being heavy handed and they were leaving although not as fast as staff might have liked. The door damaged at the hotel had taken place earlier in the day.

“They had had to force entry because the key was not working. Both men spent a week in custody because of their stupidity and their good name has been tarnished.”

Both were fined £1,000. Moore was ordered to pay £900 compensation with Thompson paying £500.
