A PRESTWICK man shouted racially offensive remarks at staff in a takeaway shop.

Steven Campbell, of Templeton Crescent, Prestwick, verbally abused workers at the Kebab House in Prestwick on Friday March 24, after a night of heavy drinking with friends.

The 31-year-old appeared before Sheriff Carole Cunninghame at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

Procurator Fiscal Scott Toal said: “The accused entered the take away at 11.30pm and he was heavy under the influence of alcohol.

“He had spoken to two males in the shop who had already bought and received their food so the accused asked two of the members of staff why his food was not ready.

“They replied saying that he had not ordered any food.

“The accused then called them a f**king stupid p**i”

Scott Toal, added: “The police attended the shop and the accused told them about the situation of not getting his food.

“The police asked staff and they told them about the racial abuse.

Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor Peter Lockhart, said: “It has been 14 years since my client’s last conviction.

“He is 31 and single and is currently living with his parents.

“He is a service technician and works all over Scotland.

“He previously lived and worked in New Zealand and hopes to return there.

“My client was out with friends and clearly drank too much.

“His recollection was that he had ordered the food.

“He had seen a female outside who seemed in distress and called the police and the ambulance and then returned into the shop.”

Peter Lockhart added: “He regrettably made these foolish remarks and he wishes to apologise to them directly.

“He contacted the police himself and brought what he had done to their attention.

“I hope this can be dealt with by a fine and compensation if applicable.”

Sheriff Cunninghame ordered Campbell to pay a fine of £300 within 28 days.
