NEW Conservative MP Bill Grant has given his backing to cancer campaigners.

Bill signed a pledge to fight for increased funding for research into brain tumours after he attended the All-Party Parliamentary Group on brain tumours which met in Westminster on Monday, July 10 for the first time since the general election.

The group will help to shape government policy whilst continuing to give a voice to patients and the wider brain tumour community.

The working group was established following a “damning” House of Commons Petitions Committee’s report last year, which highlighted that “successive governments have failed brain tumour patients and their families for decades”.

Campaigners are hoping that the eventual report from the Task and Finish Working Group will demonstrate that the Government is now prepared to show fresh commitment to improve outcomes for brain tumour patients.

Bill Grant MP, commented: “The situation for those affected by brain tumours in our communities needs changing. I have pledged to champion the cause of brain tumour patients and fight for the increase in funding so dearly needed.

“It is essential that the UK leads the way in investing in research and I welcome all that is being done by the All Party Parliamentary Group on brain tumours and the wider brain tumour community to ensure sustainable improvements are made.”

Sue Farrington Smith, the charity’s chief executive, added: “The All Party Parliamentary Group on brain tumours was established to tackle decades of underfunding for research.

“This could be a game-changing year ahead, offering new hope to brain tumour patients and their families.”
