A MOTHER, whose child was taken into care, is desperate to take care of him after he climbed out of a window at 2am to go home.

The 11-year-old boy was on holiday at Craig Tara with his social work unit on Friday when the incident happened and the boy walked to his mother’s home in Ayr in the middle of the night. He arrived at 5am.

Speaking to the Ayr Advertiser, the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “I don’t want to hand back my son. They didn’t even notice he was missing.

“He was taken into care [in March] for domestic reasons and because they said I didn’t have the right boundaries or enough control. I have been working so hard to get him back. It horrifies me how this happened.”

Our source says the decision to take the boy into care was made in December last year when she was unable to attend or have any legal representation.

She then appealed the decision which was successful but social work appealed the courts decision.

The woman continued: “Something could have happened to him. It is horrifying to have my child crying out for his mummy. He was traumatised. I feel helpless.

“I feel like I’ve let him down and even more helpless that I have to hand him back to social services. My wee boy is the most valuable person in the whole world. He is my world and I am still fighting for him.

He spends five nights in the unit and two nights at home without social work supervision. If I am an unfit mother, why am I allowed to look after him on my own then?

“A long term decision will be made in August. They will make me do an assessment to decide if I am going right or wrong. I have to give him back by tomorrow [Tuesday, July 25] or I will be arrested but I don’t feel confident doing that.”

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said the safety and wellbeing of children in our care ‘is always their number one priority’.

Paula Godfrey, Head of Children’s Health, Care and Criminal Justice Services said: “While we cannot comment on the specifics or people involved in individual cases, we are looking into an incident over the weekend where a young person absconded from the care of social work staff.

Fortunately, the young person is safe and well; however, this is something we take very seriously indeed and we are working with all those involved to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
