NHS Ayrshire and Arran has vowed to continue the treatment of a former Ayr soldier who lost both his legs in Afghanistan.

Callum Brown, 28, lost both limbs in 2011 and was being seen by specialist doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

But there was uncertainty, last week, as to whether he would be able to continue his treatment. NHS Scotland has to approve and fund specialist treatment for Scottish residents in England

Dr Alison Graham, Medical Director, said: “NHS Ayrshire & Arran is committed to funding and supporting Mr Brown’s ongoing treatment, be that in Scotland or elsewhere.

“We are in discussion with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust regarding this.

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Bill Grant has pledged to investigate the case.

Mr Grant said: “Callum put his life on the line for all of us in the UK, and lost his legs in the service of his country.

“We simply cannot let him down.

“He must be given the specialist treatment he needs in the hospital best able to offer it.

“I have been in touch with UK government departments to ensure that’s what happens.”
