TWO men have been reported for allegedly selling goods, door to door in Troon without a valid licence.

A 19-year-old and 20-year-old were stopped on Wednesday, July 26 by police for doorstep selling.

Doorstep selling involves someone selling you goods or services in your home or on your doorstep. Many honest businesses use this technique – but so do fraudsters.

While buying on your doorstep can be convenient, there is a risk that you may be pressured into buying something you actually don’t want or something that’s poor value for money.

Travelling salespeople who carry their goods with them from door to door, usually need to be licensed and as such may require to have a pedlar’s certificate.

To be eligible for a licence they need to be over 17 years of age, be a person of good character and in good faith intend to carry on the trade of a pedlar.

The licence is issued by police and must be produced by the salesperson if someone asks to see it.

A police spokesperson said: “We are encouraging local people to take some simple precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a bogus caller or an unlicensed salesperson.

“Our advice is simple - if in doubt keep them out.”
