AFTER almost a year of waiting, an Ayr family have rescued a dog from the Seychelles.

Eleanor McLaughlin and her family were holidaying last year when they noticed a dog, now named Liberty, to be malnourished and she touched their hearts.

Eleanor said: “It has been almost year but she is finally here – it shouldn’t have taken so long but they don’t have quarantine over there and she had to have her blood taken to be sent off to South Africa.

“She has settled in really well. We have two other dogs that are Yorkshire Terriers and two children so it is a bit mad.

“She is a very gentle girl.

“We had spotted her on the beach when we over visiting my mum in the Seychelles and we were shocked to see how malnourished she was.

“She came out from the palm trees so we gave her some food and water. The next day we couldn’t stop thinking about her so we went back and she was still where she was the day before.

“We picked her up and took her to the vet and decided that we were going to bring her home.

“There is a huge problem over there with stray dogs, it was not very nice to see.

“We are so delighted to have her home – she is a beautiful cross breed and we think she is around three or four years old.

“When we first collected her, she wouldn’t make eye contact with anyone and she was very timid but after a few weeks of her being here, it is lovely to see a change in her.

“We have a Facebook page about her journey and it is great that people are following us to watch her journey.”

The name Liberty came from ‘Liberty House’ in the Seychelles.

Eleanor added: “We named her after Liberty House – I had ancestors that went over from Edinburgh to help save children from slavery and Liberty House, which is now a government building, use to help children that were slaves.

“Her name was more about liberating her from her grim existence.”
