PEOPLE from across Troon can gear up for a night-time bike ride through the town.

Ayr-based charity group The Active Travel HUB are organising the Troon Bike Ride on Tuesday, November 14.

People should bring their own bike or borrow one on offer.

The meeting point is the Marr College car park at 5.30pm and the route will be short, flat and suitable for all fitness levels.

All confidence levels are encouraged, however participants must be able to ride a bike as the route takes in shared use paths.

Loads of light up and glow in the dark freebies will be given out to help cyclists see in the darkness and dull winter months while you're out on your bike.

They have a range of coloured lights that are going to be used to create a colour show during the ride and can supply hi-visibility vest if needed and a HUB goodie bag.

The event is looking to promote safe cycling at night and also looks to support national campaigns such as Be Bright Be Seen.

Organisers are looking to encourage more people to consider cycling as a viable and regular means of travel and with that reduce their travel costs, help improve health and benefit the environment.

To book a space you must contact the Active Travel Hub Ayr with the names of everyone who wishes to attend and the ages of any under-16s.

Only children aged 12 and upwards can take part and they must be accompanied by a responsible adult who must be next to them at all times.

Basic cycling skills are required for participation in the ride but the route is all off-road and will follow the Troon local cycle path.

The Active Travel HUB is funded by Transport Scotland’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Program and reflects South Ayrshire Council’s commitment to supporting and promoting active travel options and opportunities in South Ayrshire.

The aim of the HUB is specifically to develop, support and promote active and sustainable travel through the provision of a number of initiatives all of which are free of charge:

* LED Bike Rides

* Skills and confidence sessions

* Puncture repair sessions

* Bike maintenance sessions

* Bike security marking

* Support/attend local events

* Help local businesses attain Cycle Friendly Employer status

* Bike & Go Cycle Hire (charge is made for this service).

The Troon Bike Ride - as well as a number of other events - is also supported by Cycling UK as part of the Big Bike Revival campaign. This recognises again the fun element but with the underlying aim to see an increase in the number of people that use cycling as a travel choice.
