AN AYR baker was in high demand for pancakes this year.

70-year-old Tom Findlay, who has worked at Asda Ayr for 13 years, had his “biggest pancake day yet” flipping over 250 pancakes a day and residents ranking them as the “best in Scotland”.

He said: “I became an apprentice baker at 15 and worked at a family bakery for 21 years, then another bakery for 14 years and after a short time away from baking I got my job at Asda Ayr, and the rest is history.

"Pancakes have definitely become my forte; I normally make 90 packets of the smaller ones and 70 to 80 packets of the larger ones every day, with even more at the weekend.

"Then at this time of year I obviously make a lot more – the customers love them.

“I make everything from chocolate pancakes to fruit pancakes, but I think the chocolate ones are definitely the most popular. The customers are amazing.

"I get some really nice comments from them which makes me love what I do even more. The older customers say my pancakes are just like the ones they used to get years ago.

“I don’t really have a secret - it’s the same mix most people use. I’ve got a lot of experience so that definitely helps – I’ve made quite a few pancakes in my day.”
