ASSESSMENTS will be carried out at Kincaidston Primary to establish what measures can be put in place to ensure pupils are safe walking to school.

Concerns had previously been raised by dad of six, Bryan McCulloch, who felt the children’s safety was at risk as some cars were causing an obstruction and blocking the road.

A meeting was held earlier this month to discuss the issue and to find a solution to the problem.

David Strang of South Ayrshire Council told parents: “Thank you for taking the time to meet on Wednesday afternoon to observe the traffic and pedestrian movement at the school.

“It is clear that despite constant reminders and school initiatives that some parents are continuing to park irresponsibly which is creating a safety issue for pedestrians.

“It never fails to surprise me the lengths that some parents go in order to get close to the school, even when they are aware of the dangers they are creating.

“The problem at Kincaidston, which unfortunately is common to all schools, is the result of people behaviour which is not something that the school, council or police are responsible for.

“In saying that we need to continue to raise the awareness of parents and look at reasonable measures that will help improve the safety of pedestrians and in particular the children.

“Following the meeting colleagues in the Ayrshire Roads Alliance Road Safety Team will carry out an assessment to identify what further reasonable measures can be put in place.

These could include:

1: Signage
2: Bollard in pedestrian pathway behind house
3: Bollards along Cranesbill Court
4: Pedestrian barrier at edge of pavement adjacent to school gate.
5: Establish additional parking elsewhere

In the meantime the school will write to all parents again to remind them of the parking issues outside the school.
