BUSINESSES in Troon are getting involved to become more dementia friendly.

With the help of Dementia Friendly Troon & Villages (DFT&V), local businesses, including the Marine Hotel and Beauty Within, are training to become more aware of dementia and how best to interact with local people who are living with the condition.

Fiona from the Gift Horse, who took part in the training, said: “It was a really useful guide for us to know more about how we can be more accommodating to people with dementia and what we can practically do if we have concerns about individuals – I would highly recommend it to all the other shops and businesses.”

Jim Baird, from DFT&V, wants the town to be at the forefront of the new wave of dementia friendly communities.

He added: “The bespoke window stickers and pin badges can show [the community] that a business understands dementia and should give carers and people with dementia the comfort and security they need to continue using the town centre and remaining socially engaged.

"It’s also a great advert for our town for visitors over the busy summer period.”

The sessions will run every Monday from 5.30pm till 6.15pm in Troon Library – please drop in or contact Rhona Brown on 07887 841613.
