A CHARITY is giving its support to create a knitted banner of poppies to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

Hansel hosts weekly knitting workshops to make the flowers in its Hi Street store in Prestwick, running on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Knitters of all levels are welcome to attend the event - the finished poppies will be added to the camouflage netting banner in Ayr Town Hall.

Brooke O’Connell, of Hi Street, said: “We are hoping that local people will come along and take part in this wonderful initiative designed to mark this landmark anniversary and celebrate the sacrifices of the local heroes who served, fought and died during WW1.

“Our craft events are always very relaxed, and you don’t have to be a whizz with the needles as an experienced knitter will be on hand to help with any dropped stitches or knots.”

To book a place at one of the events pop into Hi Street or email brooke.oconnell@hansel.org.uk

Knitting patterns for the poppies will be available in the shop for those who can’t make the workshops.
