Plans are being stepped up to demolish the former police station in Ayr's King Street.

The force relocated to their new base at Newton House in the town last year, and the former building now lies empty.

The King Street building was at the heart of policing services in Ayrshire for almost 50 years, having opened in May 1975.

Police Scotland held a public consultation on the demolition of the building late last year, as the force plans to close, sell or demolish a number of stations across Scotland.

A 'prior notification of demolition' application has now been lodged with South Ayrshire Council, bringing the King Street building's demise one step closer.

Documents lodged with the local authority state: "The Police Scotland premises at 1 King Street was the former police headquarters for that part of Ayrshire.

"It also contained a Police Training centre with residential accommodation.

"The police stopped using it as a training centre many years ago and have move their operations to nearby Newton House.

"The 1 King Street complex of building is no longer in use and is surplus to Police Scotland's requirements."
