TWO Prestwick Academy pupils had a blast at the launch of the 'This Ayrshire Girl Can' campaign.

Accompanied by teacher, Miss Storm, S2 pupils, Emma Simpson and Emma Woods went to Ayrshire College Kilwinning to enjoy the event.

The pair listened to speakers from the college who spoke about women’s potential in male dominated industries.

Female engineers spoke about their jobs and encouraged us to challenge gender discrimination in the workplace. The event was inspirational and motivating.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also spoke at the event.

There was an opportunity to ask Ms Sturgeon, herself an Ayrshire girl, questions and hear of her experience working in a male dominated profession.

She admitted to facing discrimination and anger when sexist comments are made about women.

She spoke about her hope that future generations of young women will not be deterred from reaching their potential because they are women.

The girls said: “It was a great experience and we enjoyed getting a photo with Nicola Sturgeon on International Women’s Day.”
