TWO separate incidents of kitchen fires happened over the weekend.

The first fire took place at 4.43pm on Kirk Street and the second only a matter of hours later at 10.09pm across the town on Whiteside Terrace.

These fires which happened on Sunday March 13 makes a total of three kitchen fires in the area in the past week - with one in Troon happening last Wednesday.

Fire engines from Ayr attended two cooking related fires in properties in Prestwick within hours of each other on Sunday.

Both incidents were dealt with by breathing apparatus teams extinguishing the fires using dry powder extinguishers.

Local Station Manager Derek Davidson said “There has been a high incidence of cooking related fires throughout Ayrshire over the past week or so but to have two in Prestwick within a matter of hours of each other highlights just what a common and dangerous occurrence it is.”

“Luckily on both occasions there were no injuries however it could easily have been a very different story.

"I keep reiterating that it only takes a second of poor concentration while cooking to allow a fire to start and very quickly take hold.

"I would urge householders to pay full attention to the task in hand and do not leave pots, pans or grills switched on an unattended for any length of time.”

“In addition please ensure you have working smoke detection within your home.
