PENSIONERS and families on benefits in South Ayrshire are being urged get a cash boost to stave off the chilly weather.

Cold Weather Payments are meant to provide additional funding to those on a low income, the disabled and elderly for each week of very bitter conditions.

£25 per week is given for any seven consecutive days when the average temperature is zero or below.

Due to the extreme weather conditions Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Sandra Osborne received several calls from constituents who didn't know if they were entitled.

But it comes as SNP MSP Adam Ingram is backing demands by Age Concern and Help the Aged to increase the cold weather fuel payments to pensioners and vulnerable households.
