A mother returned home from a winter break to a freezing house after her son had swiped her central heating boiler and all the copper piping.

At Ayr Sheriff Court last week Sheriff Jack McGowan told thieving Darren Higgins, 32: "It is difficult to imagine anyone sinking muchg lower."

Higgins' mother, Elizabeth, 52, went to America on December 9 last year and returned to her home in Ayr on February 6.

She immediately noticed the house was freezing and then discovered holes in the lving room ceiling.
