A SUSPECTED torpedo picked up by a Troon based fishing boat two miles off the coast last Thursday night was blown up on Friday afternoon.

Fishing vessel Rebekah Jayne reported to Clyde Coastguard on Thursday, April 19, at around 9.30pm that it had picked up a suspected torpedo in its nets while only two miles off the Troon coast.

The coastguard contacted the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team from Faslane who advised the fishing boat to put the suspected torpedo overboard and mark its location with a buoy. The torpedo, 10 to 12 foot long, was promptly dropped back into shallower water just north of Troon harbour.
