A BLOCK of flats in Ayr was evacuated on Friday afternoon after a fire started in one of the flats.

Fire engines from Ayr and the surrounding areas, including one from Troon, were called out to Smith Street at approximately 4.20pm on Friday, May 25, after reports of smoke issuing from a third floor flat, with fire fighters wasting no time in evacuating the building.

The blaze soon became very difficult for crew to deal with as the flames spread into ceiling vents of various flats and roof spaces.
