HEARTLESS conmen cheated an elderly Prestwick resident out of almost £5,000 by using fake id to ransack his home.
The 92-year-old pensioner was the victim of two bogus workmen who have been targeting elderly residents in Ayrshire and getting into their houses by claiming to be from the water board or council.
Strathclyde Police are now urging residents to be aware of the two conartists, who are aged in their 20's or 30's and dressed in navy or dark work clothing and carrying IDs and clipboards.
They claim they need access to the home to inspect pipes or the heating systems.
Over the past week there have been seven incidents reported involving the two bogus workmen in Ayrshire and it has resulted in approximately £6,000 being stolen.
The Prestwick pensioner had £4,800 taken while a further £1,000 was stolen from a 70-year-old Kilmarnock man.
Fortunately no-one has yet been injured but many of the victims were left extremely traumatised and shaken by the incidents.
Once they gain access one of the men keeps the resident distracted whilst the other steals money or valuables from the other rooms.
