Repeat offender John McCabe, 24, appeared before Sheriff John Montgomery at Ayr Sheriff Court on deferred sentence.

Referring to a social enquiry report on McCabe - whose record runs to three pages - in which the author recommended that an admonition would be appropriate, Sheriff Montgomery said: "It beggars belief that someone in that position could make a suggestion like that to the court."

Read the full story, including how McCabe stole the knife and what sentence he received, in this week's paper - out now.
