REPORTS of strange lights in the sky over Troon at Christmas left residents stunned.

The unexplained festive lights were saw from different parts of the town, with many baffled as to what they were.

Troon Councillor Nan McFarlane was at home with family when she first noticed the strange, orange blobs above the town between 8pm and 9pm.

Nan said: "At first I thought they were planes going into Prestwick but they were going south to north and they were quite fast and it dawned on me that they were clustered together. We all came out and tried to take pictures but it was too dark."

There was eight of the them in the sky, three close together while the other five shaped like a 'W'.

It was when Nan received a call from her daughter in Coventry, who had seen similar lights above her home, that they realised it was Chinese lanterns that had earlier been released to remember those who died in the 2006 Boxing Day tsunami.

Laughing Nan added: "We actually thought at first they were space ships as they very distinctive, orange and glowing.

"It was strange, it was like fairy lights in the sky."

On Tuesday, December 29, night bright lights were also seen of the town's Municipal Golf Course.

One onlooker said they appeared to be like giant lampshades with a glowing light.
