AYR United were left gutted after a dominant display against title chasing Dundee United ended up in defeat, revealed assistant boss Neil Scally writes Stephen Bark.

Former Kilmarnock front man Topi Obadeyi scored a breakaway goal in the sixth minute to win the match for the Terrors.

The Honest Men dominated proceedings and, if it wasn’t for a bit of bad luck and excellent last ditch defending, they could have thumped their visitors.

After the match, Scally stood in for manager Ian McCall and said: “I think we had 14 [corners] against two but I don’t even think it just that. I think territory wise and chances and possession, I thought we played great today.

“It’s gutting to come away with nothing after the game.”

The result saw Ayr drop down to eighth place on goal difference after Dunfermline Athletic upset Greenock Morton 2-1 at East End Park. The Honest Men have 16 points from 16 games and sit two points above Dumbarton and the relegation play-offs.

Jamie Adams had Ayr’s best chance of the match just before half time when captain Nicky Devlin fired a low ball across the six yard box. Somehow, Adams effort from less than two yards was blocked by Lewis Toshney and it flew up and over the bar.

Scally said that chance summed up Ayr’s form of late. He said: “He [Adams] never said much about it but I think the boy has obviously got a great block in and for some reason it has went over the bar.

“That’s just how it’s happening for us just now. We’ve had a lot of good chances, we’re just not being clinical enough and, on the flip side, you’re getting people making last ditch tackles like that.

“We don’t feel as if we’re really getting a rub just now.”

Ayr have won just one of their last eight games and have picked up just two points from the last 18 available in the league. However, Scally feels his side can turn things around.

He said: “That’s the thing just now. We’re playing some good stuff, we’re getting into the right areas and we’re doing all the right things.

“I think if we keep doing what we’re doing then results will turn. I mean the boys are putting everything into it.

“We’ll play a lot worse than that today and we’ll come away three points in a lot of games.”
