RED hot striker Lawrence Shankland scored against Rangers in the William Hill Scottish Cup and now he will be hoping to repeat the feat as Ayr United face the Ibrox giants head to Somerset Park on Saturday.

The Fifth Round tie is set to be a sell-out as cup fever sweeps the town with 2,000 of the 3,500 home allocation sold and the rest expected to go and Rangers certain to sell out their 6,500 tickets with the game in so much more demand than the last League One game between the two sides.

Self-confessed Rangers fan Shankland, who has bagged 18 goals said: "My first game in the Scottish Cup was for Queens Park at Hampden against Irvine Meadow. I came off the bench to score and we ended up winning the game.

"I played against Rangers in the Scottish Cup with Queen's Park and Dunfermline and have been beaten every single time although twice we were close to getting a draw and I scored once against them for Queen's, although we lost 4-1.

"It will good to play in the game, there will be a good atmosphere in terms of the crowd and it will bring a bit of revenue into the club. We are looking forward to it and will be giving it a go - we're not there to make up the numbers. Upsets can happen.

"When you play teams of Rangers' quality you have to hope they have a wee bit of an off day and we are right on form and good for the best. We know we are a good team and can cause teams problems going forward . I want to score as many goals as possible. I grew up supporting Rangers and remember watching the 2002 final and Barry Ferguson scoring to win the game 3-2."

"The league is the most important thing and we are in a position that we could get promotion although there's a lot of football to be played."

Meanwhile striker Craig Reid says the team will give it their all in the hotly anticipated cup tie and added: "The priority is the league but we are still in in the cup and will give it a go."

However the former Motherwell man was disappointed with the 2-1 weekend home defeat against Alloa Athletic.

He said: "Losing the game is not what we want to do if we want to win the league, it was disappointing. We really have to win our games. But we shouldn't have had a goal chalked off. Now we must kick on from here an still have to play Raith Rovers here."
