AYR RFC are set to give a knockout performance when they compete alongside scores of Scottish teams - as well as guest sides from Romania, Poland and the USA – at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens on Saturday, April 14.

Now in its 128th year, the tournament has a special place in the hearts of rugby fans worldwide, and 12,000 spectators will travel to Melrose, the birthplace of rugby sevens, to see the world’s oldest tournament take place.

The men from Millbrae will face tough opposition on the day from other Scottish and international teams all eager to lift the coveted Ladies Cup.

Rugby sevens was conceived in the town of Melrose over a century ago, by local butcher Ned Haig as a fundraiser for his local team. Thought to be one of the fastest growing team sports in the world, it is now played all over the world and last year was successfully introduced into the Olympics. The seven-a-side sport’s appeal stems from its shorter playing time and fast pace, often leading to exciting, high-scoring games.

Title sponsor Aberdeen Standard Investments returns to support the historic rugby sevens tournament in 2018.

Martin Gilbert, joint chief executive of Aberdeen, says, “Nothing can diminish the atmosphere and drama of the Melrose Sevens and it is of little wonder that thousands of spectators from around the world make the annual journey to the home of rugby sevens.

“But it’s more than rugby – not only does the event attract high calibre players both local and international, but it is a day of fun and entertainment and the buzz at The Greenyards will be electric.

“Aberdeen is proud to be associated with this tournament’s fantastic history and reputation."

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens offers fun both on and off the pitch, with the camaraderie among fans making it a great day out for families, couples and rugby fans who enjoy fast and exhilarating sporting action.

Tickets for the event start from £10 for children, £15 for senior citizens and £20 for adults. Family tickets are also available for £50, admitting two adults and two children.
