TROON Ladies 2s travelled away to Garscube to play Glasgow University 4s for their final game of the season. The 2s continued fighting right up to the last whistle, but were unfortunately defeated by the league winners in a closely run match.

Glasgow started the game strong upfront, with the 2s being pushed onto a defensive footing in response. Troon couldn’t hold up under the pressure, and conceded the first goal to Glasgow. However half time saw the teams level at 1-1after Leigh Timothy found the back of Glasgow’s net with a stunning strike from the edge of the circle to equalise.

Troon pushed back with a vengeance in the second half, attacking down the flanks of the pitch to push into the opposing circle.

The visitiors secured a series of short corners but despite their opponents mistakes, were unable to capitalise on their opportunity, with shot after shot denied by the Glasgow keeper, who was on top form between her posts.

Tragedy came with 10 minutes to go as Glasgow broke back against the run of play and were able to slip past the 2s keeper, leading to their second goal. The 2s upped their game with more shots on goal - one of their best denied by the cross bar.

The pressure was wearing upon both Glasgow’s defence and their opponents, with a penalty stroke awarded after the goalkeeper trapped the ball, only for it to result in a close miss for Troon, with the ball deflecting off of the far post. It was an afternoon defined by inches, and on this occasion they were not in Troon’s favour, as they struggled to convert the opportunities they had created.

The game finished in a 2-1 win for Glasgow with the game reflecting the success of Troon Ladies 2s debut season, an up and coming young team who have demonstrated their considerable ability to hold their own against much older and more experienced teams.

Finishing third in the Women’s West District Division 4, the Troon Ladies 2s only lost four matches from the 22 they played. The squad has shown quality, strength and the ability to develop across the season, with more to expect in following years.
