(Talbot won 4-1 on penalties)

SPIRITED Girvan took the Scottish Cup holders all the way before losing out in the lottery of a penalty shoot-out last Wednesday at Hamilton Park.

It was the third time the teams had met this season, with Talbot having easily won the previous two encounters in the Super Premier Division.

The first clearcut chance came in 20 minutes when home goalie Scott Johnstone made a fine save in a one- on-one situation when he stood his ground to save the visiting striker's shot.

Three minutes later at the other end, Craig Harvey got a shot away on the edge of the box but it was blocked. Five minutes after the break Girvan won a free-kick 22 yards out, but it was fired into the wall.

Talbot then started to dominate but some good defending and some poor shooting kept them at bay.

Two minutes from time, Harvey was through on goal but two defenders managed to get back. The resulting tackle in the box took Harvey out, but the referee looked away and awarded nothing when it did look like a penalty.

The game was decided by penalties with Talbot coasting through the shootout.
